The First Phone To Get Lollipop Is The Moto G?

As you may know, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the roll out of the newest version of Android, known alternately as Android 5.0 or Lollipop. The reason for this is almost entirely selfish: I’ve had a Nexus 5 since last January, and I’m dying to get it running the newest version of Android, which is my right as the owner of Google’s (former) flagship smartphone. But it seems that despite owning the handset made specifically and solely for Android won’t allow me to enjoy the new OS first – no, that privilege goes to, of all things, the lowly Moto G.

According to a post on Ars Technica, owners of unlocked, second generation (2014 edition, that is) Moto G handsets can start downloading the over-the-air update for the Android operating system starting nowish. Why the Moto G – a mid-range, but still impressive Android handset from former Google subsidiary Motorola – should enjoy the right to have first crack at the official version of Android 5.0 is unclear. What’s so special about the Moto G, anyway? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the Moto X to get it? And, damn it, what about my stinkin’ Nexus 5?

In short, this is good news for Moto G owners, and somewhat annoying news for the rest of us Android nerds who’ve been hitting the “check now” button in the system update menu over and over again. Okay, by “those of us,” I mean “me,” but I want Android 5.0 on my damn phone!
