When asking a mother whether they would die to save their own child, most of the time the answer would be positive, but for a mother with a rare condition that put mother and child in great danger, the answer might have not come that easy since the baby was not yet born.
She saved her unborn baby’s life instead- the condition she was suffering from was called amniotic fluidembolism.
According to The Stir, the doctor described the condition like this:
The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby got into the mother’s bloodstream and caused the organs to shut down.
The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby got into the mother’s bloodstream and caused the organs to shut down.
The condition is so rare that it’s never been studied in depth and that’s why most mothers who develop amniotic fluid embolism do not survive.
When baby Declan’s heart rate began to dip, the mother was given the two options to either have anemergency caesarean under anaesthetic to save her baby’s life or delay the process and save her own.
The mother of baby Declan chose the surgery and only survived long enough to find out how much he weighed, soon after she passed on.
The struggle
Her husband has to live with the consequences of one day explaining to their son that his mother died saving his life.
